Ipoh launches 'Virtual City' phase 1
Perak Menteri Besar (state chief minister) Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali launched the first phase of the Ipoh 'Virtual City' project at Kinta City shopping centre on Monday night. Also present were Datuk Bandar (mayor) Datuk Talaat Husain, Perak Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn and Canadian Acting High Commissioner Otch Von Sinckenstein.
Being the first of its kind in Asia, the 'Virtual City' concept will be implemented in 3 phases. RM2 million has been spent on phase 1, which comprised Internet connection to the city council, interactive voice recording and payment kiosks. For 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Ipoh city dwellers can pay their bills, assessment rates and summonses through the Internet, telephone and the kiosks using credit cards or ATM cards.
5 payment kiosks were installed in Kinta City shopping centre, Ipoh Parade, Megoplex (Jalan Gopeng) and the DBI (Ipoh City Hall) building. For more details, contact 05-2442489 or visit www.mbi.gov.my.
Phase 2 is e-administration, whereby Ipohans can apply for certificates, make bookings to the council's premises, enquire information and lodge complaints by electronic means. The introduction of "city cards" is also part of 'Virtual City' phase 2, to be ready by 2002.
Phase 3 is the set up of a smart community, which will be implemented by 2003. A digital library and city architecture plan system are some elements of the third phase.
